Northstream analyzes the impact and benefits of SDN and NFV

As Software Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) are moving from hype to reality, there is a need to understand and quantify the benefits that operators can expect to achieve. Northstream was engaged by an industry player to assess the impact of SDN and NFV in a number of use cases – data center, WAN transport, EPC etc.

Northstream conducted research and operator interviews and combined these inputs with our industry knowledge and experience to identify the impact and benefits of SDN and NFV. The focus was in particular on the potential for savings in operating cost. The qualitative analysis was followed by quantification of impact, during which we identified what cost areas would be affected and the size of the potential savings in a foreseeable planning period of 3-5 years. The resulting cost savings were put in the context of an operator’s total network and indirect cost. An assessment was also made on how SDN and NFV relate to major trends of transformation and network modernization that operators are going through.

Northstream delivered a summary of findings to the client that can serve as a basis for internal discussions and strategy formulation.
